Understanding the Dark Night of the Soul

There comes a time in many people’s lives when everything that once felt familiar begins to fall away. The old ways of being no longer work. The usual sources of comfort stop bringing peace. Motivation fades. Clarity disappears. And a deep, quiet ache settles in that is hard to name.

This experience is often called the Dark Night of the Soul.

It isn’t depression, though it can feel similar. It isn’t a spiritual failure. And it isn’t a sign that something has gone wrong with you. It’s a profound inner transition, a period when the soul is shedding what no longer belongs so that something truer can emerge.

What the Dark Night of the Soul Feels Like

People often describe it this way:

  • A sense that something essential is missing, even if life looks fine on the outside

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself, from others, or from life itself

  • Old passions and interests no longer lighting you up

  • A deep restlessness or emptiness that nothing seems to fill

  • Moments of grief, confusion, or quiet despair without a clear reason

  • The feeling that you are standing between who you used to be and who you are becoming

Many people try to push through it, fix it, or spiritually bypass it. Yet the Dark Night is not something to force your way out of. It is something to move through with awareness, gentleness and support. Getting on the other side of it, is a wonderful feeling.

Why This Happens

The Dark Night of the Soul often arises when the parts of you that were built for survival, approval, or protection are no longer able to carry you forward. Something deeper is asking to be remembered. Old identities begin to dissolve. The nervous system may feel unsettled. And the soul begins calling the missing pieces of itself home. Sometimes, we need a bit of help with this process because our lives are too busy for our bodies to feel quiet and safe.

Remember though, you are in transition. This is a great opportunity for spiritual growth.

A Different Way of Meeting It

At The Living Light Institute™, we understand the Dark Night of the Soul as a sacred threshold. It is often the time when people feel most ready to reclaim the parts of themselves that stepped aside long ago: the joy, the trust, the vitality, the sense of belonging, and the quiet knowing of who they truly are.

You don’t have to navigate this alone. And you don’t have to force yourself to “feel better” before you are ready.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is create safety in your system, listen to what is rising, and allow the missing pieces of yourself to return in their own time.

If you are in a Dark Night of the Soul, know this: You’re definitely not lost or wrong about what you are feeling. You are being remade. And the light you are seeking is within, and it is ready to shine.

If this resonates with you, you are welcome to explore Soul Essence Retrieval™ or the Immersive Day of Transformation™ , a gentle, trauma-informed spaces created to support the return of what has been waiting.

Sending light and love,
