Understanding Frequency, Vibration & Resonance
Understanding Frequency Is Easier Than You Think
You've probably heard people talk about raising your frequency, changing your vibration, or resonating with someone else's energy.
But what does that actually mean?
One of the easiest ways to understand frequency is to think about an old-fashioned radio.
A radio has many different stations available to it. Each station broadcasts on a particular frequency.
When you turn the dial, you move from one frequency to another. On one station you might hear classical music. Turn the dial again and you might hear country music, rock, talk radio, or the news.
All of those stations may be broadcasting at the same time.
What you hear depends upon the frequency your radio is tuned to.
And here's where it becomes interesting.
If you don't like what you're hearing, what do you do?
You change the station.
You turn the dial until you find something that feels more agreeable to you. Perhaps you recognize the music. You enjoy the conversation. The information interests you. Something about that station feels right.
We often describe that experience by saying:
"That resonates with me."
What Does It Mean to Resonate?
Think about the way you choose a radio station.
You don't necessarily analyze why you like it. Something about the sound, music, conversation, or information simply connects with you.
You relate to it. You understand it. You enjoy being around it.
It resonates with you.
We experience something similar with people.
Have you ever met someone and immediately felt comfortable with them?
Conversation flows. You seem to understand each other. You may share similar interests, values, experiences, humor, or ways of seeing the world.
We often say, "We're on the same wavelength."
That's another expression borrowed from the language of frequency.
And you've probably experienced the opposite.
You can be around someone and feel that something simply doesn't click. Neither person necessarily has to be wrong. You may simply experience the interaction very differently.
In everyday language, we might say:
"We're just not on the same wavelength."
You Are Not a Radio, But the Radio Helps Us Understand
Human beings are obviously far more complex than radio receivers. The radio simply gives us a useful way to begin understanding how the words frequency and resonance are used within spiritual and energetic teachings.
Throughout the day, your internal state changes.
You may wake up peaceful and energized. Later, an upsetting conversation leaves you angry. An hour after that, a walk outside helps you settle. Then you receive wonderful news and suddenly feel joyful and expansive.
You are still you, but the state you are experiencing has changed.
Within spiritual and energetic teachings, we often describe these changing states through the language of frequency and vibration.
Our thoughts, emotions, physical condition, nervous system, beliefs, environment, relationships, and state of consciousness can all influence the internal state we experience and the energy we express.
In that sense, we are continually interacting with the world from different internal states.
And just as you may naturally prefer one radio station over another, we often find ourselves drawn toward people, places, ideas, experiences, and environments that resonate with us.
We Emit, send out, as Well as Receive
Here's where the radio analogy changes a little.
We aren't simply receiving information from the world around us.
We are also expressing something into it.
Think about someone who walks into a room furious.
They don't necessarily have to announce, "I'm angry."
You may notice it almost immediately through their expression, movement, tone of voice, posture, behavior, or simply the way their presence feels to you.
Now imagine someone entering who is genuinely peaceful, joyful, and grounded.
That can affect the room too.
We influence one another.
Within spiritual and energetic frameworks, this is one way of understanding what someone means when they refer to the frequency or energy a person is emanating.
It does not mean that a person's emotional state is literally broadcasting on a measurable radio frequency. Rather, frequency gives us a useful language for describing the different states we experience, express, and respond to in one another.
Why Do We Seem to Resonate With Similar Frequencies?
Have you ever noticed that you naturally feel drawn toward certain people?
Something about them feels familiar or comfortable. You may share similar interests, values, emotional states, spiritual perspectives, or ways of experiencing life.
At other times, you may find that people or environments you once enjoyed no longer feel as comfortable as they once did.
You may have changed.
They may have changed.
Or what you currently resonate with may simply be different.
This is another way the radio analogy can help.
If you change the station, you change what you are receiving and what you are listening to.
In our lives, changes in our beliefs, emotional patterns, awareness, priorities, and state of consciousness can also change what we feel connected to and what no longer seems to resonate.
This doesn't make one person "higher" and another "lower." It simply reminds us that what resonates with us can change as we change.
So Where Does Vibration Come In?
Frequency and vibration are closely connected, but they are not exactly the same thing.
Think about sound.
When a guitar string is plucked, it vibrates.
Those vibrations occur at a particular frequency, and different frequencies help create the different sounds we hear.
A simple way to remember the relationship is:
Vibration is the movement. Frequency describes how often that vibration repeats.
You don't need to understand the mathematics or physics behind it to understand the basic concept.
Different patterns of vibration can occur at different frequencies, and those differences can produce very different experiences, such as the different pitches we hear in sound.
And this brings us back to our radio.
Each station broadcasts using a particular frequency. Your radio must be tuned appropriately to receive that station clearly.
When spiritual teachings use words such as vibration, frequency, and resonance, they are borrowing language from physical phenomena to help describe something much more complex about human experience.
They give us a way to talk about how different emotional, energetic, physical, and conscious states feel, how those states can change, and how we may respond differently to people and environments depending upon the state we are experiencing.
Your Frequency Is Not Fixed
Perhaps the most important part of the radio analogy is this:
The dial can move.
You don't wake up in one emotional or energetic state and remain there forever.
Your state changes throughout the day and throughout your life.
An experience can change it.
A thought can influence it.
An emotion can shift it.
A person can affect it.
An environment can influence it.
Rest can change it.
Music can change it.
Nature can change it.
Meditation can change it.
Even becoming conscious of what you're experiencing can begin to change your relationship with it.
This means that when we talk about a person's frequency within spiritual teachings, it is more useful to think of it as dynamic rather than fixed.
And that leads us to the next important question:
If our frequency can change, what changes it?
What Influences Our Frequency?
What we experience as our overall state can be influenced by many things working together.
Our emotions can influence it. Joy, grief, anger, love, fear, gratitude, excitement, disappointment, and peace all create noticeably different internal experiences.
Our thoughts can influence it. The thoughts we repeatedly focus upon can affect our emotions, expectations, attention, and behavior.
Our nervous system can influence it. We experience ourselves and our surroundings differently when we feel calm and regulated than when we feel threatened, overwhelmed, or chronically stressed.
Our physical state can influence it. Sleep, nourishment, movement, illness, pain, exhaustion, and physical well-being can all affect how we feel.
Our subconscious beliefs and patterns can influence it. What we have learned to expect from ourselves, other people, and life can quietly shape how we interpret what is happening around us.
Our environment and relationships can influence it. The people, places, conversations, media, music, and experiences we surround ourselves with can affect our internal state.
And our state of consciousness can influence it. Meditation, spiritual practice, intuitive experiences, contemplation, and expanded states of awareness can change the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us.
This is why simply telling someone to "raise your frequency" can miss an important part of the conversation.
Before we try to change the station, it helps to understand what has been moving the dial.
Frequency Is Not a Spiritual Scorecard
Understanding frequency should never become another way to judge ourselves or other people.
Feeling grief does not mean you are spiritually failing.
Experiencing anger does not make you a "low-frequency person."
Feeling afraid does not mean you have somehow lost your spiritual progress.
Human beings experience a full range of emotions, and those emotions can carry important information.
Sometimes anger tells us a boundary has been crossed.
Sometimes grief reflects how deeply we have loved.
Sometimes fear is asking us to pay attention.
The goal is not to force ourselves to remain on a supposedly "high-frequency station" every moment of our lives.
The deeper practice is becoming aware of what we are experiencing, what may be influencing it, and how long we want to remain there.
There is an important difference between experiencing an emotion and becoming organized around it.
Becoming Conscious of the Dial
Imagine noticing that you've been listening to a radio station for an hour that you don't actually enjoy.
Until you become aware of it, the station continues playing in the background.
Once you notice it, you have choices.
You can continue listening.
You can turn it down.
You can turn it off.
Or you can change the station.
Our inner lives can sometimes work in a similar way.
We can become so accustomed to certain thoughts, emotional patterns, fears, expectations, environments, or ways of responding that we stop noticing them.
They become background noise.
Awareness allows us to hear what has been playing.
And once we can hear it, we can begin asking:
Does this still resonate with me?
Is this the state I want to continue experiencing?
What is influencing my internal dial?
Is there something here I need to understand before I try to change it?
This is where working consciously with frequency really begins.
A Simple Frequency Awareness Practice
The next time you notice a significant change in your mood, energy, or perspective, stop for a moment and become curious.
Ask yourself:
What am I feeling right now?
What happened before I began feeling this way?
What changed within me?
What thoughts became louder?
How am I perceiving other people or my circumstances from this state?
Then imagine the radio.
If my current state were a radio station, what station am I listening to right now?
There is no wrong answer.
You are simply learning to notice the dial.
From Understanding Frequency to Raising Your Frequency
Before trying to raise your frequency, it helps to understand what frequency means and what may be influencing your own internal state.
Raising your frequency is not about pretending to be happy, suppressing difficult emotions, or trying to become spiritually perfect.
It begins with awareness.
You begin to recognize what changes your state, what restores you, what depletes you, what you repeatedly resonate with, and what may no longer feel aligned with who you are becoming.
Once you understand the dial, you can begin exploring how to work with it more consciously.
A Question to Carry With You
The next time you hear the phrase "raise your frequency," remember the radio.
Then ask yourself:
What station am I tuned to right now, and what has been influencing the dial?
You may be surprised by what you begin to notice.
Because frequency isn't simply something to talk about.
It is something to become aware of.
