A guide to the consciousness of being, multidimensional identity, and the deeper meaning of I AM

The I AM

Two of the simplest words in our language may also contain one of the deepest questions of consciousness: I AM.

We use these words every day without thinking about them. I am tired. I am successful. I am afraid. I am a mother. I am a healer. I am happy.

But what happens when we remove everything that comes after them?

I AM.

Before the description, before the identity, before the story, something remains. The awareness that you exist.

And that simple awareness opens the doorway to a much deeper exploration of consciousness.

Where Does “I AM” Come From?

One of the most recognized ancient references to “I AM” appears in the Hebrew Bible.

In Exodus 3:14, Moses asks God what name he should give when the Israelites ask who has sent him. The Hebrew phrase Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh is traditionally translated as “I AM WHO I AM.” It has also been translated in ways that suggest “I will be what I will be.”

For thousands of years, these words have been associated with divine existence, presence, and being.

Long before “I AM” became associated with affirmations or modern manifestation teachings, it carried a much deeper spiritual implication: existence itself.

The Beginner Understanding of I AM

Most of us use I am to describe who we believe ourselves to be. We attach something to it:

I am Jennifer.
I am a parent.
I am successful.
I am struggling.
I am confident.
I am not enough.

Some of these statements describe facts about our present experience. Others describe beliefs. Some were given to us by families, cultures, relationships, or experiences. And some have been repeated so often that we no longer question whether they are actually true.

This is where I AM becomes important in consciousness work. Everything that follows those two words begins defining the identity through which we experience ourselves.

But the description is not necessarily the consciousness beneath it.

Before the Story

Imagine temporarily removing everything you normally use to describe yourself: your name, your age, your profession, your relationships, your accomplishments, your failures, your beliefs, your history, your physical appearance, and even the story you have created about who you are.

What remains?

I AM.

There is still an awareness that you exist.

This is where we begin moving beyond personality and into the exploration of consciousness itself.

I AM and Conscious Creation

Modern spiritual teachings often focus on the power of what follows the words I am. There is value in becoming aware of this.

If someone repeatedly declares, I am powerless. I am always struggling. I am not worthy, those statements can become deeply embedded within identity and influence how that person perceives choices, opportunities, relationships, and possibilities.

Changing the statement can begin changing the identity.

But there is a deeper level of this teaching.

Instead of only asking, “What should I put after I AM?” we can ask:

“Who is the I that is making the declaration?”

That question takes us beyond affirmation and into consciousness.

The I AM and Higher Consciousness

Within the philosophy of The Living Light Institute™, the identity you experience in everyday life is an important expression of consciousness, but it may not represent the entirety of who you are.

The personality has a name. It has memories, preferences, fears, relationships, experiences, and a story.

But consciousness may extend far beyond that story.

The deeper I AM can be explored as the awareness beneath the temporary identities through which consciousness expresses itself.

You are experiencing this life.

But is this life the entirety of you?

The Multidimensional I AM

This question becomes even more profound when we introduce multidimensionality.

If consciousness can exist or express itself across different densities, dimensions, realities, or states of awareness, then the identity experiencing this physical life may represent only one expression of a much larger consciousness.

The person reading these words has a name and a physical body. But another-dimensional expression of your consciousness may not carry that name. It may not look like you. It may not experience time as you do. It may exist within an entirely different reality.

And yet, from a multidimensional perspective, both may arise from a greater field of consciousness.

This invites a different question:

Who is the “I” that exists beyond the individual expression?

Other Expressions of the I AM

As multidimensional awareness develops, some people begin experiencing what they understand as other-dimensional expressions of themselves.

Initially, this may arise through dreams, meditation, deep hypnosis, imagery, spontaneous knowing, or altered states of consciousness. For some, these experiences remain occasional. For others, awareness becomes clearer.

Recognition develops. Communication may develop. And eventually, a person may consciously engage with an expression of themselves that appears to exist beyond their present physical identity.

From this perspective, the I AM is no longer simply:

“I am this person.”

It becomes an exploration of:

“What is the greater consciousness expressing itself through this person?”

The I AM and Source

We can take the inquiry deeper still.

If individual consciousness arises from a greater field of consciousness, where does the individual I AM end and Source begin?

Mystics and spiritual traditions have explored versions of this question for thousands of years.

Perhaps the purpose is not to arrive at an intellectual answer. Perhaps it is to experience increasingly expanded states of awareness in which the boundary between individual consciousness and something greater begins to change.

The deeper we move into consciousness, the more interesting the word I becomes.

From Identity to Awareness

There is an important difference between saying “I know who I am” and asking “What am I?”

The first often produces a collection of identities.

The second can open an entirely different doorway.

Who is aware of this lifetime? What is consciousness without its familiar story? Does consciousness exist independently of the identity it is currently expressing through? Can the larger consciousness communicate with the physical expression? Can awareness expand beyond the boundaries of ordinary perception?

These are no longer questions about positive thinking.

They are questions about the nature of consciousness itself.

A Simple I AM Practice

Sit quietly and allow yourself to become still. For a few moments, release the need to describe yourself.

Do not add anything after the words.

Simply repeat inwardly:

I AM.

Pause.

I AM.

Notice what happens when you allow the statement to remain unfinished.

Then ask:

“Who is the I?”

Do not immediately answer with your name, your body, your profession, your history, or your personality. Remain with the question.

Then go deeper:

“What am I without the story of who I believe myself to be?”

You do not need to find an answer. The question itself is the exploration.

Beyond the Foundation

For the beginner, I AM can help us become conscious of the identities and beliefs we attach to ourselves.

For the advanced student of consciousness, it becomes something much larger.

It becomes an inquiry into identity, Source, multidimensional consciousness, Higher Consciousness, and the nature of existence itself.

The teachings of The Living Light Institute™ move beyond simply discussing these ideas and into experiential exploration of consciousness.

Because eventually the question changes.

We stop asking only:

“Who am I?”

And begin asking:

“What is the consciousness that is experiencing being me?”

Perhaps the deepest exploration of the I AM begins there.
